SVG, PDF or PNG: which file do you need?
The map is ready. Now choose the file for what happens next. A printer, a presentation and a vector-design application can all use the same artwork, but they do not need the same kind of file.
Start with where the file is going
| Format | What it contains | A useful starting point |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | A fixed grid of pixels: a raster image. | Image uploads, presentations and raster printing. |
| A document page that can combine vector elements and images. | Printing a page at its intended physical size. | |
| SVG | Vector shapes and text, with images or effects where needed. | Editing in compatible vector-design software. |
PNG is a normal image file
PNG stores the finished image as pixels. It is convenient when another application asks you to upload or place an image. You can crop, resize or edit those pixels in an image editor, but roads and labels do not remain separately selectable vector objects.
Cartivale calculates PNG dimensions from your chosen physical size and package DPI: Free uses 150 DPI; paid packages use 300 DPI. Increasing the print size later spreads the same pixels over more space. Changing a resolution label alone cannot restore detail.
PDF keeps the page together
PDF preserves the physical page dimensions chosen in Cartivale. It is a convenient file to send to a print shop or open in a PDF reader for actual-size printing. Check orientation and scaling in the print dialog; a correctly sized file can still be enlarged or reduced by a printer setting.
PDF is not simply another name for a flat image: the format can hold vector and raster content. Cartivale builds it from the artwork, including the theme’s required effects. Use it as a print document rather than assuming it will behave like a neatly organized editable project in every application.
SVG gives vector workflows more room
SVG keeps vector geography that you can continue working with in compatible design software, including Illustrator and other SVG-capable editors. Designer is the personal-use package that adds SVG alongside PNG / PDF. It does not include a native AI file or a commercial license.
Vector paths can scale without being limited by a fixed pixel grid. Some artistic treatments also use embedded raster textures, masks or filters. Those parts have their own limits, and effects or fonts may be interpreted differently by another application. Open the file, compare it with the Cartivale preview and check a small print before committing to a larger job.
Files and rights are separate choices
| Package | Formats | Output quality |
|---|---|---|
| Free | PNG | 150 DPI |
| Print Ready | PNG / PDF | 300 DPI |
| Designer | PNG / PDF / SVG | 300 DPI |
| Commercial | PNG / PDF / SVG | 300 DPI |
| Creator / Resale | PNG / PDF / SVG | 300 DPI |
OpenStreetMap attribution remains on every package, including paid downloads.
The table lists included formats, not permission to use them commercially. Designer remains personal-use; Commercial and Creator / Resale have different usage rights. Keep the original downloads before making edits, and retain OpenStreetMap attribution in the finished result.
